Creating and editing images

An agent can create an image from your description or change an existing one. Every image is saved as a PNG file in your Files and costs tokens.

Image generation is off by default. It only works when it has been turned on for your instance, an image model is set up, and you are working with an agent that is allowed to create images.

Create an image

  1. Start a conversation with an agent that can create images. Using agents explains how to pick one.
  2. Below the message box, select Image. In a narrow window or on a phone, the button shows only the image icon. When it is on, it is highlighted. Hover over it to see the tooltip "Lets the agent create an image for this message. Each image costs 20,000 tokens."
  3. Describe the image: subject, setting, style and shape. For example: "A forklift in a bright warehouse, flat illustration style, landscape."
  4. Send the message. An image card appears in the answer and shows Queued, then Creating image.
  5. When the image is ready, the card shows it with its file name and a Saved in Generated images link.

Image applies to one message only and turns itself off after you send. Select it again for the next image. If you forget, the agent does not create anything. It helps you refine the description instead and asks you to turn on Image and send the message again.

The agent writes the detailed image description itself, based on your message, and picks one of three shapes: square (1024 × 1024 pixels), landscape (1536 × 1024) or portrait (1024 × 1536). Say which one you want if it matters. If you ask for several images in one message, the agent creates and charges each one separately. One message makes at most four images (the default; your instance may set a different limit). For more, send another message with Image turned on.

When the Image button is missing

You only see Image when all of these are true:

  • Image generation is turned on for your instance. If not, ask your administrator.
  • You are chatting with an agent that has the Image generation capability. A conversation without an agent has no Image button.
  • You are not in a temporary chat.
  • You are not in the agent builder's preview.

If Image is there and turned on but no image card ever appears, your instance probably has no image model set up. Ask your administrator.

Agents also don't create images in workflows that run without you.

If you build agents, you turn the capability on in the Tools step under Capabilities. The tile is called Image generation. When the tile is grayed out, hover over it to see why: Image generation is switched off for this instance or No image model is configured. See Tools, knowledge and sub-agents.

View and download an image

Hover over the image and the buttons appear in its top right corner. On a touch device they are always visible.

  • Download saves the PNG file.
  • Open preview shows the image full size in a dialog, which has its own Download button.

The file is named after the date and time it was created, in UTC, for example image-20261018-091502.png. Edited image names start with image-edit-.

Every image you create goes into the Generated images folder in Files, and the Saved in Generated images link under the image takes you there. You can't rename or move that folder. The files inside it work like any other file (see Managing files). While an image is in the trash, its card still shows it and you can restore it. The card only shows Image deleted once the file is permanently deleted: after Delete forever or Empty trash in Trash, or automatically after 30 days.

When you share the conversation, the other participants see the image. Only you see the folder link and Edit image. See Sharing conversations.

Edit an image

If your instance also has an image editing model set up, the agent can change an image based on what you describe. The result is always a new image in Generated images, and the original stays as it was.

  1. Hover over a generated image and select Edit image (the pencil icon).
  2. The image is attached to your next message, Image turns on, and the message box shows "Describe the change…".
  3. Write what should change and what has to stay the same, for example: "Make the forklift red and keep everything else."
  4. Send the message. While the new image is being made, the card shows the original blurred in the background.

You can edit your own pictures the same way. Attach the file to your message, turn on Image and describe the change. PNG, JPEG and WebP files up to 20 MB can be edited. Attach just one image, or name the file, so it's clear which one you mean. Unless you ask for a different shape, the result usually keeps the shape of the original.

If Edit image is missing, your instance has no editing model set up, or someone else created that image in a shared conversation.

What an image costs

The Image tooltip says 20,000 tokens per image. What you are actually charged is the amount set for your instance's image model, and edits are charged at the amount set for the editing model. If your instance uses token balances, images come out of yours like any other usage.

In that case, Intra AI reserves the full amount before the agent starts. If your balance doesn't cover it, no image is created. You only pay for an image that was actually delivered: if creating it fails, or an image is refused for editing, nothing is charged. Your usage is listed under Profile, usage and token balance.

Troubleshooting

Message in the image card, What to do
Message in the image cardWhat to do
"Not enough tokens for an image (needs 20,000)"Your balance can't cover another image. See Profile, usage and token balance to check it, and contact your administrator if needed.
"Image could not be created. No tokens were charged."Send the message again with Image turned on. If it keeps failing, tell your administrator.
"This image can't be edited: …"The message gives the reason, such as "it is in the trash", "only PNG, JPEG and WebP images can be edited", "it is larger than 20 MB" or "several images are attached and it is unclear which one is meant". Restore the image from the trash, convert or shrink it, or attach only one image.
"Image generation was stopped."You selected Stop while the image was being made. Send the request again.
"Image could not be loaded"Select Try again.
"Image deleted"The file was permanently deleted and can't be restored. Create the image again if you need it.
"Your trial has ended. No image was created."Your trial has ended. Contact Intra AI to continue.
